NEWS UPDATE
The wholesale price of onion in the Nepali market has increased by 60 percent in two weeks.
The price of dried onion, which was Rs 76 in the wholesale market in mid-October, reached Rs 120 on Monday, October 13.
In the last two weeks alone, the price of onion has increased by Rs 44 per kg, i.e. by 60 percent.
After the wholesale price has increased up to 60 percent, the retail price that the consumer buys has doubled.
Most of the onions consumed in Nepal are imported from India. In addition to the increase in the price of onions in India, traders said that the price of onions in the Nepalese market has increased after the government of India implemented a rule that they cannot be exported for less than 150 rupees per kg.
Although India fixed the minimum export price of onion only on Saturday, the price of onion in Nepal had started to rise two weeks ago.
The price of onion, which was Rs 102 per kg before export to India, has been increased to Rs 18 in two days.
However, even though the onion imported from India did not reach the Nepali market after that arrangement, the rights activists said that by increasing the unnatural price of the already imported product, a crime was committed against the consumer.
However, the businessmen are denying the allegation that the price has been increased by artificial storage.
They are claiming that due to the price increase in India, the price of onion purchased in India fell to Rs 107 per kg and when it was delivered to Nepal, it went up to Rs 120.
Only about 150 businessmen import onions in Nepal.
According to the data of the Customs Department, 32 thousand metric tons of onions worth Rs 1.33 billion have been imported from India in the 3 months of the current financial year - July, August and October.
Nepal imports onions from India worth more than 5 billion rupees annually.
In order to control the increase in the price of onions in the domestic market of India and the cost to the Indian consumers, the Indian government has made the export of onions more expensive until next December, according to the Indian media.
